Ugly is a movie that should not be skipped. Ugly is different. Ugly is heartbreaking.

'A woman is sitting in a dark room with reflection in the mirror facing us – she looks so depressed and lonely - cant just handle this situation –the background music is high pitch – tensed – servant in the kitchen – the woman is walking now – photo of a police officer (this is the actor we saw in the trailer and felt as the hero of this film) – she is taking something – what is that? – Gun!! – She is mentally ready now – she keeps the gun pointing at her back head through her mouth – oh my God – knock knock knock – she keeps the gun back, and opens the door – a ten year old kid gets in – angry. The title appears out of nowhere – Ugly.'
The director is Anurag Kashyap. My evertime favorite Bollywood director.

Great movies are not always that are easy to watch and take in. Ugly is different. Ugly is heartbreaking. Ugly shows the world of opportunists. This movie with dark characters in hard situations beautifully shows the savage nature of the human. Shocking, real and brutal. Great editing, great script and great camera. Fascinating. Ugly is a movie that should not be skipped. Ugly is an intense work of art.

There are more than few hard-hitting scenes which will stay in your mind for few hours at least–
  • ·         The very first scene of the movie.
  • ·         Knowing that the girl is missing, followed by the chase scene.
  • ·         First police station scene: You will feel what they are feeling.
  • ·         Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure)’s flash back.
  • ·         The finale shot. Oh My God.
Performance of Girish Kulkarni, Rahul Bhat and Ronit Roy, deserves few ‘real’ awards. The national award winner, Marathi actor - Girish Kulkarni, as an ‘irritating-at-first-look’ sup-inspector is awesome. That reaction of him at Vineet Kumar Singh after sitting behind is more than enough to show his class. Nikos Andritsakis’s frames are so natural and also dramatic, so perfect. Cinematography is an art when the frames make the audience a part of the story/situations, and the Ugly does it well. Movie starts, and suddenly you are on the streets of Mumbai. One of the most attracting things in this film is the background music. Low voice but high intensity. GV Prakashkumar’s simply takes the viewers to the situation easily.

This film stands high for its brilliance in script writing with impeccable character development. Ugly is like a newsreel that shows that - ‘Anurag Kashyap is the best director in Bollywood along with Vishal Bharadwaj, and too far from all others’. I recommend ‘Ugly’ to anyone that wants to see serious cinema in a matchless setting.
