I was born in Palakkad, Kerala and am brought up in Thalassery which is around two hundred kilometers from Tamil Nadu border and noway related to Tamil. It was all classic Malayalam and beautiful Hindi songs all the time, everywhere. I don't remember any other Tamil song played at my home other than 'Kanne Kalaimaane...' and 'Mannil Intha Kadhal...' till the release of Rahman's Roja. 'Mannil Intha Kadhal...' song is my dad's favorite Tamil song. Roja, followed by Gentleman changed everything. Nobody can pass our town without listening to the songs from Roja, Gentleman, Thiruda Thiruda, Kadhalan... etc., it was there everywhere at hotels, music stores, schools, colleges, buses... Like everybody, I too got addicted to these songs.

Then, I wanted to understand the lyrics. I always felt Tamil is the easiest language to understand and learn for people from Kerala, because... now I dont even remember how I leard Tamil, or when or where I started to learn. As far as I can remember, the first word I learned to read in Tamil was - 'ரஜினி', mainly because it was close to the Malayalam - 'രജിനീ'. It was easy.

Learning to read Tamil was through the lyrics booklet which was provided along with the music cassettes of AR Rahman movies. I never found such booklet with any other movies. I was a person who enjoyed Hindi and Malayalam songs without noticing the words much. By the mid of 90s, I started noticing lyrics - somewhere at that time I became a fan of Tamil songs. Ofcourse, it is obvious.

I knew that AR Rahman and Ilayaraja are music directors far before knowing any name from Malayalam or Hindi.

Songs have been made about every possible, dreamable and imaginable topic in the universe, and for me, the best lyrics remains to be about 'love'.

We see blind and innocent love in the songs of 90s and I feel love more with such lyrics. It looks as if it is from a soul which is struggling to express the deepness of love, it really want to say more.

These songs made me wonder whether anybody can love anybody like this! or is this the way everybody is loving their lovers!. I never asked somebody, but I simply dreamed listening the songs.

Do you remember this song? This song released when I was in 10th or plus 1. I can still remember, how much I wanted to be in love at that time... with this song in repeat mode. That was a cute feeling. A feeling that will never ever again happen.

'Vaarunkal Vaarunkal..' song from Puthu Vasantham? I still love that song. It is such a sweet song, entered my heart when I was completely innocent, when my heart was waiting to be loved. This song used to take me to an unknown world, and it still manages to take me there. Very similar feeling with songs such as 'Vizhiye Vizhiye...' from Vazhkai Chakkaram, 'Kanne En Kanmaniye En Kaiyil Vantha Poonthottame...' from Kavithai Paadum Alaigal and 'Kanmaniye Painkiliye..' from Kaavalan (Old). It was the time of audio cassettes, and I got a cassette with the title 'Inaintha Kaikal - 1990', an amazing collection of 1990 released songs, when I was not at all familiar with Tamil songs. I never tried to watch the video of these songs because, by then, I created my own visuals for these songs in my heart.

The best thing I did was listening these songs at nights when I enjoyed the rain through the windows near my bed.

'Poongatrile...' (Dil Se/Uyire, AR Rahman) always takes me to heaven or something more beautiful than that. No more to say about this musical genious.
