Is a Tamil folk story about Paruthiveeran and Muthazhagu. Paruthiveeran is a jobless duty less village youth, whose aim is to reach Madras central jail and to give interviews in TV. Muthazhagu a willful girl who is madly in love with Paruthiveeran. Because of caste inter change and for few more reasons her parents are against her wish. And Paruthiveeran used to avoid her because of his own dangerous life. Later Paruthiveeran too falls in love with her. The problems get bigger for them to be together and they decide to elope together. The movie moves around Paruthiveeran and Muthazhagu and few more characters. The story is novel and gripping.
' ... I don't care even if you kill me
I'm here to die for your order..
.
Oh my God, I am loosing my control...
I am slightly walking away from my modesty..
.
You have the fragrance of poison..
Your affection is killing me..
You have taken root in my heart..'
.
I literally went to a village called Paruthiyur. Actually I saw each and every character very near to me. I had the smell of the soil and the water there. Felt the feeling of fresh air. I enjoyed the local dance and festival mood. I loved every bit of it. Even the shadow of half built small houses had a beauty of its own.
.
Scenes to look for..
* The flash back of Muthazhagu and Paruthi as kids - in black and white is a treat to watch, and the song 'Ariyaathe vayathu.. ariyaatha manasu rendum inkae kaadhal seiyyum neram...' (Two innocent young hearts are falling in love).
* Song ' Sa re ga ma ...' and the visuals.
* First romantic scene.
* Song 'Aiyyayyo...', visuals and the lyrics.

Kudos to Ameer, the director of the movie. His presentation is so stunning that there are more than a few grand cinematic flashes. The tragic mood of the movie is present right from the starting frame. Listening to the songs will give a clue to the climax, explains well what the ending is about. Ameer has brought breathing rural unfussiness and involvedness in front of us. The characterization is simply superb.
Karthi as Paruthiveeran is striking and he never look like a new comer. He was so positive and has the relaxed attitude of a practiced actor. And I wondered how Ameer gave such a heavy role for a new comer, and the end result is very convincing. And now it is hard to accept somebody as Paruthi.
Look out for the scene: Scenes where he starts feeling and shows his love to Muthazhagu.
.
Then 'Muthazhagu', Priyamani (National Award Winner) the backbone of the movie, what a performance! Her voice is very powerful and is very apt for this particular role, the sadness in her voice was a minus for her city life characters but as Muthuzhagu, she is the best available in the industry.
Look out for the scene: where she asks her grandmother to give more food to eat after beaten by her father. She is awesome when she shouts 'My body needs strength to take his beatings.. give me more'.
The scene where she finds that Paruthi had started loving her and asks her to lay on his chest. The innocent happiness at the peak is shown in such a beautiful way. So touching.
Saravanan, Ponvannan and Kanja Karuppu, they gave high level of support to the main cast for delivering the entertaining-tragic story of Paruthiyur.
.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is a milestone and I rate this as his best album along with Puthupettai. The bgm is awesome. Watching the movie in one stress and you are not going to forget the song 'Aiyyayyoo' or 'Ariyatha Vayasu'. Masterpieces, remarkable.
Look out for the bgm: The bgm when Muthazhagu hug Paruthiveeran for the first time.

After the later 80s we had never seen such soulful, down to earth, freshness, beauty of village like this. And the current (2011) trend of village based bold movies all started with ‘Paruthiveeran’. We can see how much this movie had inspired the current trend even in characterization of the heroes.
The story is very simple and not new but the way Ameer Sultan had handled the script is terrific. We see his passion for film making in each frames. I wonder how this movie missed the entry for best foreign film for Oscars.
Review will not be completed without saying anything about climax. Yes, it is bold but it should be because it is the reason why the movie is what it is now. The movie which entertained you for two+ hours will make you cry in the last ten minutes. The boldness in the climax is not going to spoil the movie, that climax will only pull the movie from a usual standard to higher one.
.
Minus: Too much **** words and the very bold climax but that is acceptable for everybody who had seen world classics or who had visited rural areas of south Tamil Nadu. There were movies about good innocent people of villages and this movie is just another part of the same village.

I watched this movie in the big screen and now in home theater and I recommend to see this movie in blue ray disk or in the best possible print available in the biggest possible screen to enjoy the movie, to feel ‘Paruthiyur’. The movie shows the beauty of Tamil Nadu villages. Paruthiveeran is a grand endeavor and with outstanding cinematography. Cinematography of Paruthiveeran is one of the best in recent times and it is hard to remember any other movie had given such a beautiful frames, I feel even the most talked about cinematography of Maniratnam’s Raavan is a step below than Paruthiveeran.
• The wide long shot of 180 degrees was a treat to watch in big screen.
.
I recommend this movie to all, even for those who are not a fan of such kind of movie also for its breathtaking beautiful visuals.
